Sarpsborg is a municipality in Østfold county and Sarpsborg city is among the ten biggest cities in Norway. The municipality border to the north is Våler and Skiptvet, to the east Rakkestad and Halden, to the west Fredrikstad and Råde and to the south Hvaler. Sarpsborg belongs to a region called Nedre Glomma and the administration center for Østfold is situated in the city. There are more than 50000 people living in the municipality and added to Fredrikstad and surroundings there are more than 125000 inhabitants.
The river Glomma and the waterfall called Sarpsfossen, has played a vital role in the history of Sarpsborg. Sarpsborg was founded 1016 by Olav Haraldsson, known as Olav den Hellige (Olav The Saint ),. He sailed the river and had to stop by the Sarpsfossen. He there founded "Borg", later called Sarpsborg. The sawmill industry by the Sarpsfossen was slowly becoming an important industry .Later, the companies Borregaard and Hafslund's development of pulp, paper, chemical products and electrical power has made Sarpsborg a well known city .Beside being known for its industry, there are wide agricultural areas, lakes and sea for fishing and popular areas for recreation in summer.
